Solo Travel Over 50

Over a period of about 10 years (when I was much younger), I did travel about 50% of the time for business. I would travel to U.S. cities and install computer systems at travel agencies. Unlike a leisure trip, each business trip had a purpose to be in that location and I often spent long hours working at the agency. I was super busy and generally went from the hotel to the agency and back again. The one week I was scheduled to complete all my tasks went by very quickly.

Being a seasoned business traveler who frequently traversed airports and hotel rooms alone, I learned the importance of being well-prepared for the journey ahead. From packing efficiently to planning my itinerary meticulously, every detail played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth and productive trip. Traveling solo also taught me valuable lessons in self-reliance and adaptability. Navigating unfamiliar cities, dealing with unexpected delays, and finding ways to stay connected with colleagues back home all helped me enhance my problem-solving skills and resilience in diverse situations. In all cases, I could still rely on the customer to help me when issues arose. Most importantly, business travel was paid for by my company.

Meanwhile, over the last 30 years, I could generally find a friend who would offer to travel and go anywhere to experience a new adventure. Today, however, we are all older. Some are now retired with limited income, while others might be less able to get around. Still others have already passed away, leaving only the memories of past travels behind.

Today, I have few options for travel buddies, but I still have many places I want to see. The best part is I still feel physically able to do the travel. I also want to do the travel before I am too old. The question is, do I stay home or begin traveling solo?

I have decided I will begin solo traveling.

With that being said, my first solo, leisure trip is scheduled for October 2024. I am playing it safe for now and using the mode of transportation I feel safe with — cruising. As the time gets closer and I embark on the cruise, I will update this blog with my impressions of how cruising solo differs from cruising with a travel buddy.

How many of you have already embarked on solo travel for fun? Can you share one important thing that you learned and want to share?
